The Flower Carpet Festival is held biyearly, constructed with roughly by a million colorful begonias with a spectacular view of 1,800 m2 laid on Grand Place of Brussels!
The Flower Carpet event features a free entrance event that showcases a giant carpet made up of roughly 700,000 colorful begonias! In 1971 the first official flower carpet was laid out on the Grand-Place, thanks to the work of the landscape architect E. Stautemans. Since then a theme is chosen a year in advanced and it serves as the inspiration for the experienced gardeners who work on creating a beautiful flower carpet. This event occurs once every two years, with the flower installation being presented for a weekend (Assumption Day), at the Grand-Place in Brussels, Belgium.
This year the theme of the Flower Carpet is Mexico. The Flower Carpet is dedicated to Guanajuato, a Mexican region with a particularly rich floral culture and tradition.
A hundred volunteers assemble the carpet in 4 hours. The first Flower Carpet of Brussels was created in 1971 and has been a showstopper every two years on the Grand-Place since 1986.
SCENTS, COLOURS, LIGHTS AND SOUNDS…
Every other summer, the Flower Carpet offers a chance to stroll across the Grand-Place, a jewel of Gothic architecture, to inhale the fragrant scent of the begonias and admire its details. This extraordinary spectacle is made complete by a visit to the balcony of the Town Hall, which offers a wide-angle view of the work. A musical theme is especially composed for each edition. A concert is given on the Grand-Place every evening and accompanies a magnificent sound-and-light show.
